Braud | September 2, 2026* NEW ORLEANS - Hundreds of vehicles made their way through the Desire community Wednesday as volunteers distributed an estimated 40,000 to 45,000 pounds of food, according to organizers, to families during a community food giveaway backed by local and regional groups. The distribution brought together CRC We Care, We Share, volunteers from the United Cajun Navy, Desire Community Reunion and Youth Support, and community partners. Hard Rock Construction also provided two forklifts to help unload the truck carrying the food. Sara Galiano, who represented CRC We Care, We Share and the United Cajun Navy at the distribution, said the effort came together after organizers were contacted by Ronald Redditt, better known in the community as New Orleans bounce artist Hot Boy Ronald. According to Galiano, organizers saw an immediate need to provide additional support to families in the community. > “A lot of things have been changing for families out here with the requirements for food stamps and Medicaid, and he just really wanted to make sure people were taken care of right now,” Galiano said. The distribution came shortly after the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, in a community that has faced major flooding and decades of economic and infrastructure challenges. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b4/25/b42508fb-84b7-46ae-a8e1-00f0faf703ca/content/images/2026/09/IMG_0195.JPG) Despite the size of the operation, Galiano said much of the planning began only the afternoon before the distribution. “We did all this planning yesterday, starting at about 4 p.m. when I knew I had this truck coming,” she said. From there, she said, Redditt and members of the Desire community helped organize volunteers and the logistics necessary to get the food into the hands of residents. By the time Evans Cutchmore Press spoke with organizers, several hundred vehicles had already passed through the distribution. For Redditt, the event was part of a broader effort to continue supporting the neighborhood where he has deep roots. > “I’m the founder and president of Desire Community Reunion and Youth Support, and this is something I always wanted to do: give back to the community,” Redditt said. “I just want to keep this thing going.” > ***“I just want to keep this thing going.”*** ## **A neighborhood with a long memory** Desire, located in New Orleans’ Upper Ninth Ward, has a long history of community organizing and neighborhood identity. The area was once home to the sprawling Desire public housing development and endured devastating flooding during both Hurricane Betsy in 1965 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Wednesday’s distribution demonstrated another part of that history: residents and organizations mobilizing around the needs of the neighborhood. The community gathering will continue this weekend when Desire Community Reunion and Youth Support hosts its annual Desire Reunion Picnic at Sampson Park.
