NEW ORLEANS - Tulane led UTSA five seconds into Saturday night's game at Yulman Stadium. It did not lead again.

On the first snap from scrimmage, Green Wave defensive back Anthony Rogers stepped in front of an Owen McCown pass intended for Brandon Young Jr. and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown. Cooper Helmke's extra point made it 7-0 with 14:55 left in the first quarter.

UTSA scored 42 of the next 54 points. The Roadrunners ran 47 times for 223 yards and six touchdowns, converted 12 of 16 third downs, held the ball for 35 minutes and 19 seconds, and left with a 42-19 win before an announced crowd of 19,015.

Tulane committed six turnovers: four lost fumbles and two interceptions.

The result moves UTSA to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Tulane falls to 3-4 and 1-2\.

## Four fumbles, four lost

The Green Wave put the ball on the ground four times and UTSA recovered all four. Three of them came on Tulane possessions that had reached midfield or beyond.

The first came late in the first quarter with the score tied 7-7\. Tulane had driven to the UTSA 22 when quarterback Trace Johnson kept the ball on a second-and-9, lost 22 yards and fumbled. Camron Cooper recovered at the UTSA 44\. Six plays later, A'Marion Peterson took a direct snap 16 yards for a touchdown with 13 seconds left in the quarter. UTSA led 14-7.

Tulane answered with its best drive of the half. Garrett Mmahat caught a 56-yard pass on third-and-9 to reach the UTSA 18, and a personal foul on UTSA moved the ball to the 2\. On first-and-goal, Johnnie Daniels was stripped by Jameian Buxton at the 1\. RJ Lester recovered in the end zone for a touchback.

> **Tulane reached the UTSA 2-yard line trailing by seven. It came away with a touchback.**

Two possessions later, Zycarl Lewis Jr. lost 11 yards on a run and fumbled. Zach Morris recovered at the Tulane 46, and McCown finished the eight-play drive with a 4-yard scramble at 4:23 of the second quarter. UTSA led 21-7.

Tulane's fourth lost fumble came on a muffed punt early in the fourth quarter, recovered by UTSA's Elijah Newell at the Tulane 17.

UTSA scored 21 points off turnovers. Tulane scored 16.

## Helmke keeps Tulane within eight at the half

Tulane's offense moved the ball between the 20s in the second quarter. It struggled to finish.

Helmke hit a 38-yard field goal with 1:38 left in the half after a nine-play, 51-yard drive stalled at the UTSA 20\. On UTSA's next possession, Rogers intercepted McCown for the second time, at the Tulane 25\. Johnson then completed four passes in the final minute, three of them to Oliver Mitchell Jr., and a pass interference penalty put the ball at the UTSA 15\. Helmke's 33-yard field goal as time expired made it 21-13.

Tulane outgained UTSA 197 to 172 in the first half. Over the full game, the Green Wave got inside the UTSA 20 four times and scored one touchdown.

## The third quarter

UTSA took the second half with two long drives.

The first went 72 yards in seven plays. McCown hit David Amador II for 30 yards on third-and-4 and DJ Allen for 22 on third-and-5, and Will Henderson III ran the final 9 yards for a 28-13 lead at 9:34.

The second took 13 plays and 5 minutes and 55 seconds. Brandon High Jr. carried eight times on the drive, including a 12-yard run on third-and-7, and scored from the 5 on third-and-goal. UTSA led 35-13 with 2:41 left in the quarter.

UTSA converted all five of its third-down attempts in the third quarter. Tulane went 0 for 3, ran for minus 6 yards, and was held scoreless. Its last drive of the quarter ended when Willie Nelson intercepted Johnson on fourth-and-12 at the UTSA 17.

## Daniels' 81-yard run

Tulane's biggest play came from its own 12-yard line.

After Jack Tchienchou forced and recovered a Peterson fumble at the Tulane 3, a ruling upheld on review, the Green Wave faced fourth-and-1 at its 12 with 8:08 to play. Daniels ran up the middle for 81 yards before Morris caught him at the UTSA 7\. Daniels scored on the next play.

The 97-yard drive took five plays. Tulane's two-point try, a pass from Mmahat to Destyn Hill, fell incomplete. UTSA led 35-19 with 7:37 left.

UTSA closed it out after Morris intercepted Johnson near midfield. Henderson broke a 34-yard run on third-and-4 to the Tulane 1, and backup quarterback Mark Wiepert scored on a keeper with 2:00 left. Tulane's final drive ended on downs at its own 22.

## By the numbers

Henderson led UTSA with 102 yards on 15 carries. Peterson ran for two touchdowns, both out of direct snaps, and High added 50 yards. McCown completed 16 of 23 passes for 173 yards with two interceptions, and Amador caught five passes for 47 yards.

Johnson completed 24 of 44 passes for 265 yards with two interceptions. He was sacked three times, all by UTSA's Owen Pewee, who also had two quarterback hurries. Hill caught five passes for 54 yards, Mitchell four for 46, and Mmahat two for 62.

Daniels finished with 104 rushing yards on eight carries. Tulane's team total was 67 net yards on 22 carries, a figure that includes 26 yards lost on sacks.

> **Tulane's 21 carries other than Daniels' 81-yard run netted minus 14 yards.**

Dickson Agu and Kevin Adams III led Tulane with eight tackles each. Ahamad Chapman led UTSA with six.

Three Tulane players were listed in the play-by-play as injured on the play: defensive lineman PaLanding Drammeh in the first quarter, starting offensive lineman Ryan Mickow in the second, and linebacker Makai Williams in the third.
